The recognition that simple sugars in the diet cause weight gain and insulin resistance has led to the widespread use of low carbohydrate diets.  The most popular of these low carbohydrate “lifestyles” include Atkins’ diet, the Zone diet and the Carbohydrate addict’s diet.  While these diets claim to assist in overcoming insulin resistance, they tend to do part the job for a variety of reasons, including lack of compliance.  Furthermore, these diets are applied sometimes with recommendations for excessive saturated fat or protein intake.
